Pro Negative 400 - An Everyday Film Simulation for Fujifilm Cameras

Not every film recipe needs to be bold and make a statement. Every time I get a new camera (in this case my Fujifilm X-H2), I try to create a film simulation that I can use as a “standard”/Every day profile. It needs to look good in all lighting conditions and be relatively flexible. Today’s recipe is my first attempt at such a recipe. Pro Negative 400 isn’t going to give you the look of retro film or your favorite Lomography stock, but it will give you unique colors suitable for every day memory making and reduce your need to edit in post.

This recipe was created using the PRO Neg Hi simulation, which Fujifilm describes as, “Ideal for portrait with slightly enhanced contrast.” I would say that is an accurate description, as this simulation will give you deeper blacks and nice skin tones. Personally, I enjoy a healthy bit of contrast in my images (personal taste).

One of the features that makes this color palette unique from the standard profile is the shift in the white balance towards the yellows and greens. This shift is noticeable in the images it produces, but the look is natural and not overpowering.

The example images included in this post are SOOC (straight out of camera) JPEGs and the colors have not been edited in post. I don’t edit the photos because I want to give my readers realistic expectations of what they can expect from the recipe.

This film simulation was made using the following gear:

Camera: Fujifilm X-H2

Lenses: Sigma 100-400mm f/5.6-6.3, Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8, Voigtlander 40mm f/1.2 (M-Mount)

Adapter: Metabones M-Mount to X-Mount
