Sigma FP / FP L - Sunset Red Color Mode Review

For those of us who like to experiment with color, Sigma offers 15+ built in Color Modes for JPEGs and video. I’ve been testing these Color Modes and posting my sample shots here for other people who may be interested in the Sigma FP series. This week I used Sigma’s “Sunset Red.” I was able to take photos in a variety of conditions. I had a few sunny days and a few overcast days, which was helpful in ascertaining how this Color Mode performs in the varying elements.

Sigma FP / FP L - Orange and Teal Color Mode Review

The Sigma FP and FP L feature an Orange and Teal Color Mode that is genuinely impressive. Orange and Teal has long been a favorite of photographers and cinematographers, and now Sigma has brought an offering to the table. This review provides sample photographs to show why I think Sigma’s Orange and Teal picture profile is one of the best around.

Vivid +2 - Film Recipe for the Sigma FP and FP L

I created a new film simulation (recipe) for the Sigma FP and FP L. This film simulation is similar to those used on Fujifilm and those you’ll find on the Fuji X Weekly website. The simulation is called Vivid +2. This article includes the recipe instructions and sample JPEG images. For vibrant colors, I increased the strength of the Vivid Color Mode by 2 stops. I really like the fact that Sigma allows the user to adjust the strength of the picture profile, something you can’t do on the Ricoh GR III.

Sigma FP / FP L - Monochrome Color Mode Review

This is my 4rd article reviewing the Color Modes on the Sigma FP and FP L cameras. These cameras feature 15+ color modes which can be used when shooting JPEG and video. Previously, I reviewed “Warm Gold,” “Powder Blue,” and “FOV Classic Yellow” all of which I really enjoyed. This article is my take on Sigma’s “Monochrome” offering.

Olympus / OM System Grainy Film I Black and White - A Review of ART Filter 5

Olympus’ Grainy Film I is a black and white filter which artificially adds grain to the final JPEG file. The grain is definitely noticeable, especially when cropping. That said, I enjoy the look, and it makes these images of north Africa look as if they could have been taken a few decades ago. It gives a timeless aesthetic to the modern world.

Sigma FP / FP L - Powder Blue Color Mode Review

This is my review of Sigma’s Powder Blue color mode. Sigma’s color science, their compact FP cameras, and their robust color mode library convinced me to purchase a Sigma FP and a 45mm f/2.8 DG DN. I’ve long suspected the FP has a lot of still photography potential, and now it’s time to put it to the test. Over the next few weeks, I’m planning to test out the color modes (film simulations) on the Sigma FP and FP L.

Kodak Magenta Chrome - Film Simulation for Ricoh GR III and GR IIIx

I’m back this week with another Ricoh GR III (and GR IIIx) film simulations. In my never ending pursuit to create a Kodak Portra 400 recipe, I was doing some experimenting, and came up with what I’m calling Kodak Magenta Chrome. Admittedly, the recipe isn’t that close to Porta, but that is ok.

Sigma FP / FP L - Warm Gold Color Mode Review

This is a review of Sigma’s Warm Gold picture profile. Sigma’s color history, their compact FP camera line, and their robust color mode library culminated in me purchasing a used Sigma FP and the Sigma 45mm f/2.8 DG DN. I’ve long suspected the FP has a lot of untapped photography potential, and now it’s time to put it to the test. Over the next few weeks, I’m planning to test out the color modes (film simulations) on the Sigma FP.

Olympus / OM System Art Filters - A Review of ART 16 - Instant Film

This is the second article where I discuss the built in art filters on my Olympus e-m1 mark ii. As far as I know, most modern Olympus or OM System cameras include these art filters. The Olympus e-m1 mark ii has a dedicated dial on the mode selector specifically for ART mode, although I believe this setting was removed on the latest OM System OM-1. Today I tested Art Filter 16 - Instant Film.

Olympus / OM System Art Filters - A Review of ART 13 I (Vintage I)

This article is the first of a series of tests of the Olympus e-m1 art filters. The first few articles will be a test of the art filters as designed by the manufacturer, followed by a few articles of me trying to produce some usable film simulations.

The first art filter I employed was the ART 13 I (Vintage I). I picked it because it was one of the least offensive to my eye. I took my e-m1 mark ii on a walk in Bizerte, Tunisia and grabbed some shots at the outdoor market. All of these photographs were taken using the Panasonic Lumix 14mm f/2.5.

Pastel Film 400 - Film Recipe for Ricoh GR III and GR IIIx

This is a new film simulation for the Ricoh GR III (and GR IIIx). I created Pastel Film 400 using the pre-installed Negative Film Preset. It features low contrast and mid-high saturation. My favorite thing about this film recipe is how it renders blue colors. Blues are captured in a pastel pallet. Deeper blues are lightened, bringing an overall softness to the images.

Natural Analog - Film Simulation for Ricoh GR III and GR IIIx

This is a new film simulation for the Ricoh GR III (and GR IIIx). You can install the preset settings into your Ricoh and shoot JPEGs with a similar look. Interestingly, you can also use these recipes as LUTs. Although I don’t recommend the Ricoh GR for video, it can be nice in a pinch. The recipes act as LUTs when the Ricoh is put into video mode. This film simulation was created using the famous Positive Film picture profile. I dropped the saturation and the contrast and over-exposed the images a bit more than the standard profile. I’m calling this simulation Natural Analog.
