Sigma FP / FP L - Monochrome Color Mode Review
Introduction
This is my 4th article reviewing the Color Modes on the Sigma FP and FP L cameras. These cameras feature 15+ color modes which can be used when shooting JPEG and video. Previously, I reviewed “Warm Gold,” “Powder Blue,” and “FOV Classic Yellow” all of which I really enjoyed. This article is my take on Sigma’s “Monochrome” offering.
Review of Sigma Monochrome Color Mode
Let me start off by saying, I’m not the greatest B&W photographer. I generally photograph in color, and only occasionally dedicate myself to monochrome. So, my eye is not as trained as others when it comes to spotting compositions and light.
Overall, I really enjoyed the results I was able to achieve. This color mode has a nice balance of contrast and tonality. The Sigma’s 24MP sensor picks up a high level of detail, which allows the B&W tones and textures to pop. I recommend protecting your highlights in high dynamic range situations, as you’ll have plenty of room to bring up the shadows if you choose to edit in post.
One struggle I had with this simulation, which I’ve not experienced to the same degree with the others, is that it can be difficult to dial in the correct exposure when using the LCD screen outdoors. I found myself having to do some exposure adjustments in post to photos I thought were exposed correctly in camera. Using the detachable EVF-11 would remedy this problem, but I thought it was worth noting for those without it.
I’m looking forward to using Sigma’s monochrome more in the future. Next time, I’ll probably add some additional contrast and compare my results to the default settings.
It would be really interesting to see Sigma come out with a monochrome only Sigma FP L. Sigma thrives in niche spaces, and I’d love to see some competitors to the Leica Q2 Monochrom and the Leica M11 Monochrom. If Sigma could keep the price around $2,500, a Sigma FP L Mono would undercut the competition and potentially snatch up some market share.
Below, you’ll find 15+ sample shots, all taken with my Sigma FP. I hope they help you in forming your own opinion about the “Monochrome” color mode.
