Sigma FP / FP L - Sunset Red Color Mode Review
Introduction
At this point, I’ve lost count of how many reviews I’ve done of the Sigma Color Modes on the Sigma FP and FP L. If I had to guess, its somewhere around 6. I remember reviewing “Warm Gold,” “Powder Blue,” “MonoChrome,” “Orange and Teal,”and “FOV Classic Yellow” all of which I really enjoyed.
Today, I’m sharing my sample images from another Color Mode, this one titled “Sunset Red.”
Review of Sigma FP Sunset Red Color Mode
The more I use the Sigma FP, the more I’m convinced it doesn’t get enough credit. Sure, its a bit quirky, a bit different, and a bit odd, but that was what drew me to the camera in the first place. Reviewers critiqued the Sigma FP and FP L for many things, but one thing you never heard them complain about was Sigma’s color science. Whether you’re shooting RAW or with one of the many JPEG profiles, colors are true to life and beautifully balanced.
For those of us who like to experiment with color, Sigma offers 15+ built in Color Modes for JPEGs and video. I’ve been testing these Color Modes and posting my sample shots here for other people who may be interested in the Sigma FP series.
This week I used Sigma’s “Sunset Red.” I was able to take photos in a variety of conditions. I had a few sunny days and a few overcast days, which was helpful in ascertaining how this Color Mode performs in the varying elements.
All the photos in this review are straight-out-of-camera JPEGs, the colors have not been edited in any way. These opinions are my own and they were not influenced by the manufacturer in any way. I purchased all my gear with my own money.
So, what did I think of Sunset Red?
This Color Mode probably doesn’t make my top 3, but that isn’t to say it’s bad. I would grade it a 7/10. In sunny, evening, or morning light, it is beautiful (see the sample photos). The colors are rich, soft, and welcoming.
If cloudy weather didn’t exist, I would give it a 9/10. But I do feel this Color Mode begins to struggle when used in overcast weather. The colors lose their richness and the shadows become a little grungy.
In my opinion, the first sample photo (below) of the yellow and white flowers represents the best of this Color Mode, while the second photo of the two camels and the palm tree represents the worst.
I try to keep these reviews short, because the sample photos are more helpful than my waffling.
