Retro Cinema Film - Sigma FP and FP L Film Recipe

Retro Cinema Film - Film Simulation for the Sigma FP

This new film simulation for the Sigma FP and FP L is based on Sigma’s pre-installed Color Mode titled “Cinema.” I made a few adjustments to the contrast and intensity of the original profile to creation this recipe. I’m increasingly impressed with the color science on the Sigma FP. It’s almost as if this camera can’t produce an ugly color. The color balance in each Color Mode is so well executed! I’ve not experienced such a pleasing balance of colors on any other camera I’ve owned. I really do believe Sigma has better color than any other camera on the market.

My custom film simulation leans into the rich greens and browns already present in the Cinema Color Mode but dials back the effect slightly. I decreased the shadows slightly and added +0.4 fill light. Fill light is an adjustment unique to Sigma cameras. This is how they describe it on their website:

  • “The SIGMA fp series has within its body a “Fill Light” function, which is useful to adjust the brightness of an image by adding extra light energy into the shadow regions without altering the exposure of highlighted regions.”

It took me a couple months to test the Fill Light feature, but when I did, I realized how valuable it is. It fits my editing style perfectly.

I hope you enjoy this recipe and the sample photos!

Unlike many other film simulation websites, I try my best to include varied sample images, photos taken in diverse lighting conditions with diverse colors. This gives future users a realistic idea of what they can expect from the simulation, rather than giving unrealistic expectations by only displaying photos that show off the simulation’s strong points.

Sample Photos from Sigma FP with Azure Natural Film Simulation

All of these sample images are straight-out-of-camera JPEG images, the colors are original and have not been edited. All of these photographs were taken with the Sigma FP with an adapted m-mount Voigtlander 35mm f1.2 (version 1).
